National Park Service rangers offer a wide variety of interpretive programs throughout the year on the South Rim and seasonally on the North Rim. All ranger programs are free and open to the public.

Indicates that the Program is wheelchair accessible with assistance. Wheelchairs may be available for loan at Canyon View Center.

Note: Children must be accompanied by an adult on all programs.

All outdoor programs are subject to cancellation due to weather.

Village Area (South Rim)
Description Time Place
Cedar Ridge Hike: Descend 1,140 ft / 347 m below the rim with a ranger on the zigzagging South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge. This strenuous hike is not recommended for people with heart or breathing problems or walking difficulties. Sturdy footwear and at least 1 qt / 1 lt of water per person are required; hat, sunscreen, and snacks strongly recommended. Allow 3 - 4 hours for this 3 - mi (round trip) hike on an unpaved trail. Access to trailhead is closed to private cars. Take the Village Route shuttle bus to Canyon View Information Plaza, then cross the plaza and hop on the Kaibab Trail Route shuttle by 6:30 am 7:00 am - Daily South Kaibab Trailhead
Coffee on the Rim: Join a ranger for a .5 hr discussion regarding the tremendous challenges facing the Park. Interested in air quality? Preserving natural sounds? Solitude? Conserving a national heritage for future generations? Bring your questions and comments. The hotel provides coffee for a fee or feel free to bring your own. Allow 30 min. Let's Talk Geology: There is only one Grand Canyon. How did it come to be? What do its rocks tell us about the earth's history? Allow 40 min total for a short walk and a .5 hr talk. Meet by the bicycle rack at Yavapai Observation Station. 8:30 am Yavapai Observation Station
Alien Invaders: Help stop the invasion of the habitat snatchers! Leave your mark on Grand Canyon by joining the Habitat Restoration Team in its continuing battle with non native plants. Activities to restore parts of this beautiful park may include digging out non native plants or collecting seeds and cuttings. Bring a hat and 1 qt / 1 lt of water for this adventure. For ages 5 to adult; ideal for families. Allow 1.5 - 2 hrs. Meet by the flagpole on the rim side of El Tovar Hotel. 8:30 am

Read the Rocks - Geology Walk: There is only one Grand Canyon. How did it come to be? Walk with a ranger along the rim and learn how to read the earth's history in the rocks of the canyon. Allow 1 hr for this leisurely .5 mi (one way) walk along the Rim Trail. For this morning walk, meet at the flagpole on the rim side of El Tovar Hotel. For the afternoon walk, meet at the bicycle rack at Yavapai Observation Station. Lure of the Canyon: What lures people to Grand Canyon? Is it the wildness of open spaces, the endless wonder of stone and light, the mighty Colorado River that rages below, or is it something else? Make your own connection as you are introduced to Grand Canyon National Park. Program may include a short walk on a paved path. Meet at the Visitor Center at Canyon View Information Plaza. Living on the Edge - Rim Walk: This leisurely walk provides a perspective on Grand Canyon through an introduction to its cultural and natural history. Allow 1 hr for this easy .5 mi (one way) walk on a paved trail. Meet at the flagpole on the rim side of the El Tovar Hotel. River View Rim Hike: Enjoy superb views of the Colorado River as you learn about the past, present, and future of Grand Canyon. This moderately strenuous rim hike is not recommended for people with heart or breathing problems, walking difficulties, or fear of heights. Sturdy footwear, water, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended. Allow 90 min for this guided 1 mi (one way) hike to Pima Point on an unpaved trail. Meet at the bell at Hermits Rest. Remnant Impressions - Fossil Walk: Walk among brachiopods, sponges, and other marine creatures that thrived on this part of the continent 260 million years ago.
